WINTON ESTATE

Winton Estate in East Lothian has around 330ha mixed woodland, two thirds as standard, lowland belts with one large block at Saltoun Big Wood. A fresh trio of estate foresters manage the woods for continuous cover so that through regular, heavy thinning and a blend of natural regeneration with replanting, species and age diversity are encouraged.

Winton aim is to make more from the standing trees for tourism and from the felled timber through processing.  Firewood is an established enterprise; small-scale milling is seen as the next step in adding value to bring out the best of the timber.
