SoundWood is a trees and timber enterprise located on the Sound of Mull, owned and run by qualified forester Jake Willis B.A. M.Sc.
SoundWood provides the Highlands and Islands and Argyll with sawmilling services, Scottish hardwood planks, lintels and beams, TRADA graded structural softwood beams and cladding, wood machining and joinery, and seasoned hardwood firewood for local delivery. The enterprise also undertakes tree surgery (fully qualified and insured) and provides forestry consultancy to a wide range of clients, specialising in training, community woodland development, and adding value to mixed woodlands.
Scottish Hardwood SoundWood sources timber from local under-managed woodlands in the Highlands and Argyll, aiming to bring these woods back into a healthy state of management. Timbers available usually include Oak, olive Ash, Wych Elm (some burry), Beech, Cherry and Sycamore in lengths typically 1.5-4m. We carry a small stock of air-dried boards which can be kiln-dried and planed to order. Larger section beams and lintels can also be sawn to order or purchased from air-dried stock. Our workshop can produce a range of planed and profiled timber. Nothing is wasted—poorly formed logs and branchwood from woodland management are broken down and seasoned in our passive solar kiln to provide high grade firewood.
Timber Cladding SoundWood processes Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir, European/Hybrid Larch and Lawson Cypress for horizontal or vertical cladding, straight, bevel or waney-edged, in lengths from 2m to 6m. All our timber cladding is sawn to your specification and does not require any timber treatment to enhance its natural durability. Unless a finish is applied, timber cladding will gradually change with exposure to sunlight to an elegant, silver-grey colour. We are happy to recommend cladding options for your project. Using these alternative Scottish timbers for your cladding project contributes to diversifying our forestry resource by reducing reliance on Sitka spruce.
Structural Timber We saw Oak, Larch and Douglas Fir to order for bespoke house and shed projects. SoundWood is accredited by BM TRADA to undertake softwood visual strength grading of structural timber to British Standard (grades C14 to C24 depending on species and end use). We also undertake interesting joinery and construction projects.
Contract and Mobile Milling We offer an affordable on-site or contract milling service with the Woodmizer LT20 for customers who have their own logs from which they would like to generate their own beams or planks. Please phone or email to discuss your project.
Forestry and Rural Development Consultancy Previous work undertaken includes: biomass feasibility studies and business plans (supply side); woodland management plans; forestry grant applications; technical advice on trees, small-scale extraction and timber processing; forestry-related training programme design and implementation; training delivery. Prior employers include Forestry Commission Scotland, the Community Woodlands Association and Voluntary Service Overseas.
